When beginning the game a great way to earn gold at the outset is simply to mine. Not only will this get your mining skill up more quickly, but it will also drop what the game calls Star Stones. So far I have not found a use for them but expect that to change in the future. For now they can be sold for in game gold and can be quite profitable when first starting the game.
That being said, my best advice to any beginner is to get your glider as soon as possible. Gliders are the primary means of transportation next to walking and running. And there are places in the game that are inaccessible to those who don’t have a glider.
Accumulating the resources for a glider at the beginning of the game can be quite time consuming as we need to mine for star stones so we can purchase 2 pieces of fabric worth 190 gold each and 5 pieces of leather at 60 gold each. We also have to take some extra time to increase our foraging skill so we are able to purchase the recipe for a basic sawmill so we can then make one from the resources we scrounge for it so we can then make the sapwood planks required for the glider. Or…we can get all this stuff for free!
In the landscape of Palia there are treasure chests to be found from place to place. The ones I’ve listed below not only are accessible without a glider, but they also contain everything you will need to have Najuma build your glider for you! Once you have obtained these treasure chests you will also still need to purchase two additional pieces of leather. This can be done at the cash register at Tish’s furniture shop. And because each of these treasure chests also contain some gold you will have enough to cover the cost of those two pieces of leather!
There are a lot of other treasure chests still to be found, and you get a reward for finding 12 of them in Kilima Valley and another reward for finding 30 of them in Bahari Bay. And collecting them all at the beginning of the game (some require the glider to get to) you will find yourself well stocked with some supplies you will find yourself needing as you play the game.
One last note about getting your glider: Before you begin collecting the necessary treasure chests be sure to take the strange item you find on your plot to Jina. The sooner you do that the sooner the quest to get your glider begins!
